Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, occupying the southern 40% of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin. It is the only place in the world where the Netherlands shares a land border with France, as the northern portion of the island is the French Overseas Collectivity of Saint-Martin. The border is open and lacks physical barriers, a unique geopolitical arrangement established by the Treaty of Concordia in 1648. The country is characterized by a hilly volcanic landscape, with its highest point being Sentry Hill at 341 meters. Its strategic location in the Leeward Islands has made it a central hub for maritime and aerial transport within the northeastern Caribbean region.

The political status of Sint Maarten underwent a significant transition on October 10, 2010 (known as 10-10-10), when the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved. Sint Maarten became an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, attaining the same status as Aruba and Curaçao. Under this arrangement, Sint Maarten manages its own internal affairs, including its legislature, judiciary, and executive government. However, the Kingdom of the Netherlands remains responsible for foreign policy and national defense. The government is a parliamentary democracy, with a Governor representing the Dutch Monarch and a Prime Minister leading the Council of Ministers, who are accountable to a unicameral Parliament.

The economy of Sint Maarten is almost entirely dependent on the tourism sector, which accounts for approximately 80% of the nation's economic activity. The island serves as one of the busiest cruise ship destinations in the Caribbean, with the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise & Cargo Facilities in Philipsburg capable of hosting several of the world's largest vessels simultaneously. Beyond cruise tourism, the country has a significant stay-over industry supported by luxury resorts and a vibrant yachting sector. The "duty-free" status of the country makes it a major regional shopping destination, and the absence of a value-added tax on goods significantly bolsters its retail and commercial competitiveness.
