The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis is a twin-island sovereign state located in the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. It is the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere, both in terms of population and land area. The two islands are separated by a shallow two-mile channel known as "The Narrows." Saint Kitts, the larger of the two, is characterized by a central mountain range dominated by the dormant Mount Liamuiga volcano. Nevis, nearly circular in shape, consists almost entirely of a single volcanic peak, Nevis Peak, surrounded by coastal plains. The country’s strategic location in the eastern Caribbean historically made it a prize for European colonial powers.

Politically, the nation is a federal parliamentary democracy and a Commonwealth Realm. It recognizes the British Monarch as the head of state, represented locally by a Governor-General. The head of government is the Prime Minister, who leads the majority party in the National Assembly. The constitution, established at independence in 1983, is unique in that it grants the island of Nevis a high degree of autonomy. Nevis has its own dedicated Island Assembly and a Nevis Island Administration headed by a Premier. Furthermore, the constitution contains a specific provision (Section 113) that allows Nevis the legal right to secede from the federation if a two-thirds majority of its citizens vote to do so in a referendum.

The capital city, Basseterre, is located on the southwestern coast of Saint Kitts and serves as the federation’s administrative, commercial, and financial center. Founded by the French in 1627, it is one of the oldest towns in the Eastern Caribbean. The city’s layout and architecture reflect a blend of French and British colonial influences, featuring a central square known as "The Circus," modeled after Piccadilly Circus in London, complete with the Berkeley Memorial Clock. Basseterre is home to the country’s deep-water port, which facilitates international trade and serves as a major hub for the regional cruise ship industry, significantly contributing to the local service economy.
