The island of Saint Helena is a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, situated approximately 1,950 kilometers west of the coast of southwestern Africa and 4,000 kilometers east of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is one of the most remote settled islands in the world. Formed by volcanic activity on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the island's landscape is characterized by rugged, precipitous cliffs that rise abruptly from the ocean, leading to a mountainous interior. The highest point is Diana’s Peak, which reaches an elevation of 823 meters above sea level. This isolation historically made the island a vital strategic point for sailing ships traveling between Europe, the East Indies, and South Africa before the opening of the Suez Canal.

Administratively, Saint Helena is part of a single territorial grouping known as Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. While the three entities share a single Governor and a Supreme Court, they are constitutionally equal and maintain separate budgets and legislative frameworks. The current constitution, which came into force in 2009, provides the island with a significant degree of internal self-government while the United Kingdom remains responsible for defense, international relations, and internal security. The Governor is appointed by the British Monarch and acts as the representative of the Crown. The local legislature, known as the Legislative Council, consists of 12 elected members and three ex-officio members, overseeing the day-to-day administration and policy-making for the island’s population.

The capital of the territory is Jamestown, which is also the main port and the center of the island’s commerce. Founded in 1659 by the East India Company, the town is situated in a narrow, steep-sided valley on the northwestern coast. Because of the restricted geography of the valley, the town is laid out in a linear fashion, with buildings constructed from local volcanic stone reflecting Georgian architecture. Jamestown serves as the seat of government and houses the "Castle," a historic complex that includes the Governor’s office and the council chambers. The town is connected to the residential area of Ladder Hill by Jacob’s Ladder, a staircase of 699 steps built in 1829 to transport goods between the town and the hilltop fortifications.
