Notable Facts
Romania is a unitary semi-presidential republic situated in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea to the east, Bulgaria to the south, Serbia to the southwest, Hungary to the northwest, Ukraine to the north and east, and Moldova to the east. The country's geography is defined by the Carpathian Mountains, which traverse the center in a large arc, dividing the Transylvanian Plateau from the lower plains of Wallachia and Moldavia. This diverse landscape includes alpine peaks exceeding 2,500 meters, fertile river valleys, and the vast Danube Delta, which is the second largest and best-preserved delta in Europe.
The modern state of Romania was formed in 1859 through the personal union of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Following the Russo-Turkish War, Romania gained formal independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. The country significantly expanded its territory after World War I, incorporating Transylvania, Bukovina, and Bessarabia, a period referred to as "Greater Romania." After decades of communist rule following World War II, the nation underwent a violent revolution in 1989, leading to the establishment of a multi-party democracy and a market economy, eventually joining NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007.
The executive power is shared between the President and the Prime Minister. The President is elected by popular vote for a maximum of two five-year terms and serves as the head of state, commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and representative in foreign affairs. The Prime Minister is the head of government, appointed by the President with the approval of the bicameral Parliament. Legislative authority is vested in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The judicial system is independent, with the High Court of Cassation and Justice serving as the highest court, while the Constitutional Court ensures that laws align with the nation's 1991 Constitution.
