Notable Facts
The State of Qatar is a sovereign emirate located on a small peninsula protruding approximately 160 kilometers into the Persian Gulf from the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It shares its only land border with Saudi Arabia to the south and is otherwise surrounded by the sea, with maritime borders near Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran. The terrain is primarily a flat, low-lying desert plain covered with sand, though it features some low limestone outcroppings in the west. Its strategic location and control over significant maritime routes have historically made it a vital node for regional trade and pearl fishing long before its emergence as a modern energy giant.
The political system of Qatar is an absolute monarchy, ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-19th century. The Amir is the head of state and holds nearly all executive, legislative, and judicial authority. He appoints the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, who assist in the administration of the country. While a 2003 constitution introduced a partially elected Consultative Assembly (Shura Council), the Amir retains the power to appoint one-third of its members and holds a final veto over all legislation. There are no political parties, and the governance model blends traditional tribal consultation with modern bureaucratic structures, ensuring a high degree of internal stability.
Qatar’s economy is defined by its status as one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). It possesses the North Field, the world’s largest non-associated natural gas field, which it shares with Iran. This massive resource has propelled the nation to have one of the highest GDP per capita rates globally. The hydrocarbon sector typically accounts for more than 60% of the government's total revenue. To manage this wealth, the state established the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, which invests in diverse international assets ranging from real estate in London to global automotive and financial corporations.
