Notable Facts
The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia, situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of over 7,641 islands categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions from north to south: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The country is bounded by the South China Sea to the west, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Celebes Sea to the southwest. As a nation sitting squarely on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the Philippines is characterized by a mountainous interior, a high density of active volcanoes, and frequent seismic activity. It is the world’s fifth-largest island country by land area and maintains a unique cultural identity shaped by millennia of Austronesian roots, followed by significant Spanish and American colonial influences, making it one of the few predominantly Christian nations in Asia.
The political system of the Philippines is a unitary presidential constitutional republic. The government is divided into three co-equal branches: the executive, led by the President who serves a single six-year term; the legislative, a bicameral Congress consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives; and the judicial, headed by the Supreme Court. The President functions as both head of state and head of government, as well as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Administratively, the country is divided into 17 regions, which are further subdivided into provinces, cities, municipalities, and "barangays" - the smallest political unit and a legacy of pre-colonial village structures.
Manila, the capital city, is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on the island of Luzon. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the world and serves as the epicenter of the nation's economic, political, and social life. Originally a fortified Muslim settlement, it was captured by the Spanish in 1571 and became the capital of the Spanish East Indies. Today, the city is a blend of historic colonial landmarks - such as the walled city of Intramuros - and modern skyscrapers. Greater Manila, known as Metro Manila, is a sprawling megacity composed of 16 integrated cities and one municipality, housing the headquarters of major corporations and international institutions like the Asian Development Bank.
