Notable Facts
The Republic of Paraguay is a landlocked sovereign state in central South America, often referred to as the "Heart of America" due to its central location on the continent. It is bordered by Brazil to the east and northeast, Argentina to the south and southwest, and Bolivia to the northwest. Unlike many of its neighbors, Paraguay’s history and national identity are defined by a deep and pervasive synthesis of European and indigenous cultures. This is most visible in its status as a truly bilingual nation, where both Spanish and the indigenous Guaraní language are official and spoken by the vast majority of the population. The country is divided by the Paraguay River into two starkly different geographic regions: the fertile, humid east and the vast, semi-arid plains of the Gran Chaco to the west.
The political system of Paraguay is a representative democratic republic with a multi-party system. The government is divided into executive, legislative, and judicial branches, with the President serving as both head of state and head of government for a single five-year term. Following decades of authoritarian rule under Alfredo Stroessner, which ended in 1989, the country adopted a new constitution in 1992 that established a framework for democratic governance and protected civil liberties. The National Congress is bicameral, consisting of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Politics has historically been dominated by the Colorado Party (Asociación Nacional Republicana), which has held power for most of the last 70 years, with only one brief interruption.
Asunción, the capital and largest city, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South America, founded by Spanish explorers in 1537. Because it served as the base for many expeditions that founded other cities across the continent, it is known as the "Mother of Cities." The city is the center of the country's financial, political, and cultural life, featuring a mix of colonial architecture and modern high-rises. Key landmarks include the Palacio de los López, the seat of government, and the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes, which serves as a memorial to the country’s fallen soldiers. The city’s location on the left bank of the Paraguay River makes it a critical port for the nation’s river-bound international trade.
