The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state and microstate located on the French Riviera in Western Europe. It is bordered by France on three sides and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Governed as a constitutional monarchy, the nation’s political structure is headed by the Prince of Monaco, a position held by the House of Grimaldi since 1297. The 1962 Constitution establishes a system where the Prince shares legislative power with the National Council, a unicameral body of 24 members elected by universal suffrage. Executive power is exercised by a Minister of State, who is typically a French or Monegasque citizen appointed by the Prince, leading a Council of Government. This unique political arrangement reflects Monaco’s close diplomatic and military ties with France, as formalized by various treaties over the centuries.

The demographic profile of the Principality is distinct due to the fact that its national citizens, the Monegasque, constitute a minority in their own country - approximately 32% of the total population. The remainder is composed of French (19.9%), Italian (15.3%), British, and over 120 other nationalities. This international composition is a result of the country’s high-income economy and status as a global financial hub. While French is the official language, English and Italian are widely spoken in commerce and daily life. The indigenous Monegasque dialect, a Gallo-Italic language with roots in Ligurian, is preserved through mandatory instruction in primary schools but is rarely used as a primary tongue in the modern urban environment.

Monaco's economy is one of the most prosperous in the world, characterized by a high concentration of wealth and a service-oriented structure. Unlike many nations, the state generates a significant portion of its revenue through value-added tax (VAT) and commercial transactions rather than personal income tax, which was abolished for residents in 1869. While the country is world-famous for the Monte Carlo Casino, gambling accounts for less than 5% of the national revenue today. The dominant sectors are now banking, asset management, and real estate. The banking sector is particularly robust, with consolidated assets often exceeding the national GDP by several fold, specializing in private wealth management for an international clientele.
