Liberia holds a unique position in African history as the continent's oldest modern republic, having declared its independence on July 26, 1847. It was founded by the American Colonization Society (ACS) as a settlement for free people of color and formerly enslaved people from the United States. Unlike almost every other African nation, Liberia was never colonized by a European power during the "Scramble for Africa" in the late 19th century. This independence was maintained through skillful diplomacy and a series of treaties with European neighbors. The national motto, "The Love of Liberty Brought Us Here," reflects the motivations of the early settlers, though the country's history has since been defined by the complex integration of these settlers with the 16 primary indigenous groups.

The political system of Liberia is a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, modeled closely after the United States. The President serves as both the head of state and the head of government, elected by popular vote for a six-year term, with a limit of two terms. The legislature is bicameral, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The 30 senators serve nine-year terms, while the 73 members of the House serve six-year terms. This structure was reaffirmed by the 1986 Constitution, which replaced the original 1847 charter. The legal system is a blend of English Common Law and customary law, reflecting the dual heritage of the Americo-Liberian settlers and the indigenous ethnic groups that inhabited the region for centuries.

The flag of Liberia, often called the "Lone Star," bears a striking resemblance to the flag of the United States, signifying the historical link between the two nations. It features eleven horizontal stripes - six red and five white - representing the eleven signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence. The blue square in the upper left corner represents the African continent, while the white star within the square symbolizes Liberia as the first independent republic in Africa. Red signifies courage and bravery, white represents purity and high moral standards, and blue stands for liberty, justice, and fidelity. The flag is a ubiquitous symbol of national pride and is one of the most recognized maritime flags in the world due to the country’s open ship registry.
