Lesotho is unique as the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,400 meters in elevation. Often referred to as the "Kingdom in the Sky," the country’s geography is dominated by the Maloti Mountains and the Drakensberg range. Over 80% of the territory is situated above 1,800 meters, resulting in a landscape defined by jagged peaks, deep river valleys, and high-altitude plateaus. Because of this extreme elevation, Lesotho experiences significantly cooler temperatures than its neighbor, South Africa, and it is one of the few places on the African continent where snowfall is a regular occurrence during the winter months. This alpine environment dictates the nation’s bypass of tropical diseases and influences its specialized agricultural and livestock practices.

The political framework of Lesotho is a constitutional monarchy, where the King serves as a living symbol of national unity but possesses no executive or legislative authority. Under the terms of the 1993 Constitution, the Prime Minister acts as the head of government and holds executive power, typically being the leader of the majority party in the National Assembly. The legislature is bicameral, consisting of an elected National Assembly of 120 members and a Senate composed of 22 principal chiefs and 11 individuals appointed by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister. This system blends modern democratic governance with the country’s traditional chieftainship structures, which remain highly influential in local administration and the distribution of communal land across the rural highlands.

The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) is one of the most ambitious multi-billion-dollar engineering feats in Africa, designed to harness the country’s abundant water resources. Through a series of massive dams, such as Katse and Mohale, and a network of tunnels, water from the Senqu (Orange) River system is redirected to the Gauteng region of South Africa. In exchange, Lesotho receives significant royalty payments and generates nearly all of its domestic electricity through the Muela Hydropower Station. The Katse Dam, with its impressive double-curvature concrete arch, is one of the highest dams in Africa and has fundamentally altered the local economy by creating new infrastructure and roads in previously inaccessible mountain regions.
