Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, situated in the Bay of St. Malo, approximately 22 kilometers off the coast of Normandy, France, and 161 kilometers south of Great Britain. Although it is geographically closer to France, it is a British Crown Dependency. This status means that Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom, nor is it a British Overseas Territory; rather, it is a self-governing possession of the Crown. The island’s terrain consists of a high plateau sloping from north to south, with dramatic cliffs reaching heights of 140 meters along the northern coast and long, sandy beaches defining the southern shoreline. The island’s landscape is intersected by several lush, wooded valleys that run toward the sea.

The constitutional status of Jersey is rooted in its historical link to the Duchy of Normandy. In 1066, William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, became King of England, bringing the islands under the same rule. When mainland Normandy was lost to the French Crown in 1204, Jersey chose to remain loyal to the English King as Duke of Normandy. Today, the British monarch is recognized as the "Duke of Normandy" in Jersey. The UK government is constitutionally responsible for the island’s defense and ultimate international representation, but Jersey maintains its own legislative assembly, known as the States Assembly, and its own legal and fiscal systems, operating independently from the British Parliament in Westminster.

Jersey is a premier international offshore financial center, and the finance industry is the primary driver of the local economy, accounting for roughly 40% of the island's Gross Value Added (GVA). The sector is characterized by a high concentration of banking, trust company business, fund management, and specialized legal services. Jersey’s fiscal independence allows it to set its own tax rates, which has historically attracted significant foreign capital and high-net-worth individuals. The island is regulated by the Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC), which ensures compliance with international standards for anti-money laundering and transparency, maintaining Jersey's reputation as a stable and sophisticated jurisdiction within the global financial network.
