Hungary is a landlocked state in Central Europe, governed as a unitary parliamentary republic under the Fundamental Law of 2011. The executive branch is led by the Prime Minister, who holds the most significant political power and is typically the leader of the largest party in the National Assembly. The President of the Republic serves as the head of state, performing largely ceremonial duties such as representing the nation internationally and formally appointing high-level officials. The legislative body is the unicameral National Assembly, consisting of 199 members elected every four years. Administratively, the country is divided into 19 counties and the capital city of Budapest, which maintains a special autonomous status with its own municipal government.

The demographics of Hungary are characterized by a high degree of ethnic homogeneity, with approximately 85% of the population identifying as Hungarian (Magyar). The largest minority group is the Roma, followed by smaller populations of Germans, Slovaks, Romanians, and Serbs. The nation is currently facing a significant demographic challenge due to a declining birth rate and an aging population, common among many European states. Hungarian is the official language and is notable for being a non-Indo-European language belonging to the Uralic family, making it linguistically distinct from its Slavic, Germanic, and Romance neighbors. While the state is secular, Roman Catholicism is the historically dominant religion, with significant Reformed (Calvinist) and Lutheran minorities.

The geography of the nation is defined by the Pannonian Basin, a vast plain surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains and the Alps. Roughly half of the territory consists of the Great Hungarian Plain (Alföld) in the east, which is characterized by flat, fertile land used extensively for agriculture. The Transdanubian region in the west features more varied terrain, including the Transdanubian Mountains and the Mecsek Hills. The country's highest point is Kékes in the Mátra Mountains, reaching an elevation of 1,014 meters. Significant river systems, most notably the Danube and the Tisza, bisect the country from north to south, providing essential water resources for transport, irrigation, and power generation.
