The Republic of Guatemala is a sovereign nation located in the northernmost part of the Central American isthmus. It is bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, Honduras to the east, and El Salvador to the southeast, with a significant coastline along the Pacific Ocean to the south. The country is characterized by a highly mountainous interior, dominated by two major mountain ranges: the Sierra Madre and the Cuchumatanes. These ranges create distinct ecological zones, from the tropical lowlands of the Petén and the Pacific coast to the temperate highlands. Guatemala’s strategic location makes it a vital bridge between North and South America and a primary corridor for regional trade and migration within the Western Hemisphere.

The political system of Guatemala is a representative democratic republic operating under a constitutional framework established in 1985. The government is divided into three independent branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. The executive branch is led by a President and Vice President, who are elected by popular vote to a single four-year term and cannot be re-elected. The President serves as both the head of state and the head of government, appointing a cabinet of ministers to manage the various administrative departments. The legislative branch consists of the unicameral Congress of the Republic, which currently comprises 160 deputies elected through a combination of national and departmental lists. This structure is designed to ensure a separation of powers and provide regional representation across the country's 22 departments.

Economically, Guatemala possesses the largest economy in Central America, with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimated at approximately $121 billion as of 2025. The economy is heavily driven by the private sector, which generates more than 85% of the national output. Key economic sectors include manufacturing, particularly in food processing and textiles, and a diverse service sector that accounts for over 60% of GDP. The country maintains a relatively stable macroeconomic environment, characterized by low inflation rates and a consistent exchange rate for the national currency, the Quetzal. Remittances from the large Guatemalan diaspora, primarily residing in the United States, play a critical role in the economy, providing a significant source of foreign exchange and supporting domestic consumption across rural and urban households.
