Notable Facts
The Hellenic Republic is a sovereign unitary state located at the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is bordered by Albania to the northwest, North Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the northeast. Its geography is defined by a highly fragmented coastline of 13,676 km - the longest in the Mediterranean - and an archipelago of approximately 6,000 islands and islets, of which roughly 227 are inhabited. The terrain is predominantly mountainous, with the Pindus range forming the "backbone" of the mainland. Mount Olympus, the highest point at 2,917 meters, holds significant historical and mythological importance. Strategically, Greece dominates the Aegean Sea and the southern approaches to the Turkish Straits, serving as a critical link between Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Administratively, Greece is organized into 13 regions (peripheries) and one autonomous monastic state, Mount Athos. The regions include Attica, Central Greece, Central Macedonia, Crete, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus, Ionian Islands, North Aegean, Peloponnese, South Aegean, Thessaly, West Greece, and West Macedonia. Following the 2011 Kallikratis reform, these regions are further subdivided into 74 regional units and 332 municipalities. Athens, the capital and largest city, serves as the primary political and economic hub, housing approximately one-third of the national population. Thessaloniki, located in the north, is the second-largest city and a major secondary administrative and commercial center for the Balkans.
The political system of Greece is a parliamentary republic. The President of the Republic is the head of state, elected by Parliament for a five-year term, and performs largely ceremonial duties. Executive power is exercised by the government, led by the Prime Minister, who is typically the leader of the party with the majority of seats in the legislature. The Hellenic Parliament (Vouli ton Ellinon) is a unicameral body with 300 members elected by universal suffrage for four-year terms. Since the restoration of democracy in 1974, the political landscape has been characterized by a stable multiparty system, though it was significantly impacted by the economic reforms and fiscal oversight following the 2010 debt crisis.
