Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, occupying a strategic position at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered to the north by the Spanish province of Cádiz and is separated from the African continent by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. The territory is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, a monolithic limestone promontory that rises to an elevation of 426 meters. Despite its small land area of approximately 6.7 square kilometers, Gibraltar’s geographic location has historically made it one of the most fortified and contested military positions in the world, serving as a critical naval base for the United Kingdom for over three centuries.

The political system of Gibraltar is a representative parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. As a British Overseas Territory, the British monarch is the head of state, represented locally by the Governor, who is responsible for matters of defense, external affairs, and internal security. Head of government is the Chief Minister, who leads the elected government and is responsible for all domestic policy areas. The Gibraltar Parliament is a unicameral legislature consisting of 17 elected members and a Speaker. Gibraltar enjoys a high degree of self-governance, maintaining its own tax system, legal jurisdiction, and public administration, while remaining formally under British sovereignty as affirmed by the 2006 Constitution.

The legal system of Gibraltar is based on English Common Law and statutory law, following the traditions and principles of the United Kingdom. It has its own independent judiciary, which includes the Magistrates’ Court, the Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeal. The final court of appeal for Gibraltar is the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. While closely aligned with English law, the Gibraltar Parliament has the authority to enact its own primary and secondary legislation to address the specific needs of the territory. The legal framework is particularly robust in areas concerning financial services, maritime law, and online gaming, providing a stable and familiar environment for international businesses and investors.
