France is the largest nation in Western Europe by land area, often referred to as "L'Hexagone" (The Hexagon) due to its six-sided shape. It shares borders with eight countries: Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Andorra, and Spain. The country’s territory is not limited to Europe; it includes five overseas regions - French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, and Réunion - as well as several overseas collectivities. These territories grant France the second-largest Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the world, covering over 11 million square kilometers. The metropolitan landscape is diverse, featuring flat coastal plains in the north and west, the central plateau of the Massif Central, and the rugged mountain ranges of the Alps in the southeast and the Pyrenees in the southwest.

The French Republic operates under a semi-presidential system defined by the Constitution of the Fifth Republic, established in 1958. This system divides executive power between the President, who is the head of state and elected by direct universal suffrage for a five-year term, and the Prime Minister, who is the head of government appointed by the President. The legislative branch consists of a bicameral Parliament: the National Assembly (lower house), whose 577 members are elected by direct vote, and the Senate (upper house), whose members are elected indirectly by local officials. The government is responsible to the National Assembly, which has the power to dismiss the cabinet through a motion of censure.

France possesses a highly diversified market economy, ranking as one of the world's largest by nominal GDP. It is a leading global player in sectors such as aerospace, pharmaceuticals, luxury goods, and financial services. The state maintains a significant presence in certain key industries, particularly in energy and public transport, though many previously state-owned enterprises have been privatized since the late 20th century. France is a major destination for foreign direct investment in Europe and is a founding member of the European Union and the Eurozone. Its economic policy is characterized by a high level of social spending and a robust labor code that emphasizes employee protections.
