Notable Facts
Fiji is an archipelagic nation located in the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 2,000 kilometers northeast of New Zealand's North Island. The country consists of more than 330 islands, of which about 110 are permanently inhabited, along with more than 500 islets. The two most significant islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which together account for about 87% of the total landmass. These islands were formed primarily through volcanic activity and are characterized by mountainous interiors, with the highest point being Mount Tomanivi on Viti Levu, reaching an elevation of 1,324 meters.
The geological composition of Fiji is diverse, featuring a mix of volcanic, sedimentary, and coral formations. Most of the larger islands possess a core of volcanic rock surrounded by sedimentary deposits and, in many cases, fringing coral reefs. The nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is vast, covering roughly 1.28 million square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean. This maritime territory is rich in marine biodiversity and serves as a critical resource for the country's fishing industry. Coastal areas are often low-lying and protected by extensive reef systems, including the Great Sea Reef, which is the third-longest continuous barrier reef system in the world.
Fiji operates as a parliamentary republic under the Constitution of 2013, which established a unicameral legislative system. The Parliament of Fiji consists of 55 members who are elected through a multi-member open-list system of proportional representation. The head of state is the President, who performs primarily ceremonial duties and is appointed by Parliament. The head of government is the Prime Minister, who is elected from among the members of Parliament and wields executive authority. The legal system is based on English common law, supplemented by local statutes. The judiciary is independent, comprising the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court.
