Australia is a vast island continent and sovereign country located between the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area, comprising the mainland, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. Geologically, it is the oldest, flattest, and driest inhabited continent, with a landmass characterized by a stable crystalline shield that has remained largely unchanged for millions of years. The country's topography is dominated by the Great Western Plateau, the Central Lowlands, and the Great Dividing Range, which runs parallel to the eastern coast. Despite its massive scale, the interior is largely arid or semi-arid, leading to a population distribution that is heavily concentrated along the fertile coastal fringes.

The Commonwealth of Australia is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a system of government that blends elements of the United Kingdom’s Westminster system and the United States’ federalist structure. King Charles III serves as the head of state, represented by a Governor-General, while the Prime Minister serves as the head of government. The legislative branch consists of a bicameral Federal Parliament, comprising the House of Representatives and the Senate. Australia is divided into six states - New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania - along with two major mainland territories, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, each maintaining its own government and legislative responsibilities.

Canberra serves as the nation’s capital, a planned city established in 1913 following a competition between Sydney and Melbourne for the designation. Located within the Australian Capital Territory, Canberra was designed by American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin to incorporate significant areas of natural vegetation and geometric patterns. The city houses the High Court of Australia, the Parliament House, and numerous national cultural and administrative institutions. Unlike the coastal metropolitan hubs, Canberra is situated inland at an elevation of approximately 580 meters, surrounded by the Brindabella Ranges, which form the northern extremity of the Australian Alps.
