Notable Facts
Antarctica is the Earth’s southernmost continent and home to the geographic South Pole. It is a land of extremes, being the coldest, driest, and windiest continent on the planet. Unlike the Arctic, which is a frozen ocean surrounded by land, Antarctica is a massive landmass covered by a permanent ice sheet.
Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent, covering about 14 million square kilometers. During the winter, it nearly doubles in size as the surrounding sea ice expands. This seasonal expansion is one of the largest physical changes on Earth’s surface occurring annually.
The Antarctic Ice Sheet is the largest single mass of ice on Earth. It contains approximately 30 million cubic kilometers of ice, which represents about 70% of the world's fresh water. If the entire ice sheet were to melt, global sea levels would rise by an estimated 60 meters (200 feet).
