Albania is situated in the Balkans with a coastline that spans both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The country shares land borders with Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, North Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south. Its geographical position has historically made it a strategic crossroads between Central Europe and the Mediterranean world. The landscape is predominantly mountainous, with the Albanian Alps in the north and the Ceraunian Mountains in the south. These mountain ranges cover approximately 70 percent of the territory, creating deep river valleys and high plateaus. The coastal plains are fertile and serve as the primary agricultural regions, benefiting from a Mediterranean environment that transitions into a more continental climate further inland toward the mountainous eastern borders.

The Albanian language, known as Shqip, constitutes an independent branch of the Indo-European language family. It does not have any close living relatives and is distinct from the Slavic or Greek languages that surround it. Linguists generally divide the language into two primary dialects: Gheg, spoken mainly in the north, and Tosk, prevalent in the south. The Shkumbin River serves as the traditional geographical dividing line between these two linguistic groups. Modern standard Albanian was established in the 20th century, primarily based on the Tosk dialect. The alphabet used today is Latin-based, consisting of 36 letters, which was finalized during the Congress of Monastir in 1908. This linguistic uniqueness is a central element of national identity, reflecting the ancient Illyrian roots that the population traces back to antiquity.

The ancient city of Butrint, located in the far south near the border with Greece, serves as a significant archaeological site reflecting various periods of Mediterranean history. Originally an Illyrian settlement, it evolved into a Greek colony, a Roman city, and later a Byzantine port. The site contains a well-preserved theater, a Roman forum, and a large paleo-Christian baptistery with intricate mosaic floors. Due to its strategic location on the Straits of Corfu, it was also contested by the Venetians and the Ottoman Empire. The ruins are situated within a national park that encompasses a saltwater lagoon and marshes, providing a unique intersection of historical ruins and natural topography. Excavations continue to reveal how the city functioned as a commercial hub for timber and agricultural goods throughout the classical and medieval eras.
